The macros above can be hit through real food, but calcium cannot. Muscle meat is naturally very high in phosphorus and almost zero in calcium, which means a meat-based meal without supplementation creates a dangerous imbalance. FEDIAF guidelines require a minimum Ca:P ratio of 1:1, but unsupplemented homemade diets typically run closer to 1:10. Over time this leaches calcium from bones. Eggshell powder or bone meal in every bowl helps significantly, but a complete daily supplement also covers vitamin D, vitamin B12, zinc and EPA/DHA omega-3, all nutrients that are genuinely difficult to hit consistently through food alone.
This is especially important before switching to a homemade diet, and for puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, or dogs with existing health conditions. This tool provides general guidance based on FEDIAF nutritional guidelines but does not replace professional veterinary advice. Nutritional needs vary by individual dog.
